Transformation in Iowa

I was standing in the the same place - under the same spotlights - that I had been standing in several years before.

The same polished floorboards reflected the lights into my face, leaving the rest of the auditorium in shadow.

I felt - and heard - the same rustle of nervous energy from the crowd of young athletes seated in front of me.

Still… a lot had changed since the last time I had stood up to speak at the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Sports Camp for the state of Iowa.

The world had changed - we had experienced a global pandemic, we had been rocked with uncertainty, chaos, and upheaval, and many of the young people in front of me had become wounded, disillusioned, and jaded.

Over the last few days of camp, my daughter Kailah and I had felt that it was important to be gentle in our communication as we spoke with the group, to present the love and message of Jesus clearly but without compromise, and to give space for the young people to ask questions in a safe environment.

I had devoted several mealtimes to simply sit with young people and allow them to share doubts and ask questions.

We had done our best to communicate well.

But would it be enough?

I knew - with a deep certainty - that only God Himself could draw people into a life-changing relationship with Jesus.

“I’m going to count to three,” I looked out at this group of people in front of me that I had grown to care deeply about over the last week, “If you want to say Jesus, I’m going to ask you to stand to your feet - BOLDLY - and we’ll say ‘yes’ to Him together.”

One. Two…

THREE.

There was no hesitation - nearly every young person in the room stood to their feet, many with tears in their eyes.

In this season of brokenness and uncertainly, I watched as Jesus drew nearly three hundred young people into a relationship with Himself.

And the sight of it rocked me to my core.

Again.

This REALLY is why we do what we do - all over the world people are experiencing brokenness at an unprecedented level, and we are passionate about reaching them with the life-transforming love and message of Jesus.

Because we know that JESUS is the answer - and we know He loves them desperately.
