When Trusting God is Like Hanging From a Cliff...

I was clinging to a tiny, rough bump on an otherwise smooth rock face several hundred feet above the ground.

The muscles in my forearms were burning from exertion and my calves were beginning to shake - I pressed tighter against the dusty rock, ignoring the sharp heat of the sun-baked granite against my skin.

"SLACK!"

My shout sounded raspy and a little bit frantic.

"GOT IT!"

My climbing partner yelled back and pulled the rope tight - his job was to keep me from injuring myself, and he hadn't been holding the rope closely enough for my taste.

To be fair, he was probably doing his job perfectly, but I could feel myself starting to slip, and I was fighting a real sense of panic.

As I clung desperately to a few chalky holds, suspended above an expanse of open air, I KNEW that the rope attached to my harness was designed to catch me if I fell.

The rope had been tested to support thousands of pounds, and I had tied it carefully and had my partner check the knot before climbing.

In my head, I knew that the rope would protect me.

But as my feet began to slip, and the muscles in my forearms began to fail and my own sweat began to compromise my grip, it genuinely, truly did not FEEL like I was safe.

And sometimes this is the way it feels to follow Jesus - on an intellectual level we know that He loves us and promises to be with us in our most challenging moments, but we struggle to believe this on an emotional level.

In this three-minute clip from our upcoming podcast episode, we talk about this struggle and the importance of trusting Jesus in the midst of the battle.

The good news (I guess?!?) is that I DID fall off of the rock face - many times.

And the rope caught me.

Every. Single. Time.

God is good, friends, and when we surrender our lives to Him, we can trust His promise: “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” [Heb 13:4]

Even when we struggle to FEEL that we can trust Him, we can - He's always faithful, and He loves us more than we can possibly imagine.

God bless you, friends, and thanks for sharing the journey with us!
